Fall Prevention Services at Therapydia

If you or someone you love has had one or more falls recently, physical therapy can help. Balance is a complicated sense that we rely on every day but one that can fail in the face of certain disorders and as a result of aging.

With targeted balance training, risk assessments, and environmental assistance, we’ll help you reduce the risk of falls without making a drastic lifestyle change.

Fall risk assessments

Fall prevention begins with understanding what difficulties a person might be having with balance. In some cases, poor vision, diminished reflexes, and/or muscle weakness play a direct role that can be compensated for in a variety of ways. In other cases, medications, chronic pain, or vertigo symptoms may be present that we would help treat differently.

Our assessments provide a baseline for balance, flexibility, strength, and walking gait that allow our specialists to craft a personalized treatment plan to start strengthening a person’s balance.

Fall prevention plans

At Therapydia, we tailor fall prevention services to the specific needs of each patient. Some folks may be recovering from a vestibular disorder whereas others have experienced muscle atrophy that can be mitigated through exercise. In many cases, patients are recovering from injuries sustained during a fall that may or may not have required surgery.

In any case, physical therapy is a conservative, holistic treatment approach that can help patients regain a sense of independence and sure-footedness in their living space that can be life-changing.

What to expect from your appointment

While everyone’s treatment will be different, there are several options people often benefit from as part of a fall prevention plan, including:

  • Strength training
  • Balance/gait training
  • Functional movement conditioning
  • Chronic pain relief plan
  • Assistive devices

Depending on your unique circumstances and goals from treatment, you may benefit from ongoing physical therapy appointments to consistently improve the risk of falls. Others may have more discrete recovery timelines from an injury or disorder that require less long-term follow-up. Your physical therapist will communicate clearly and frequently about what you should expect for the best results.

One thing that sets Therapydia apart from other providers of fall prevention services is our personal approach to care. We will be honest about the benefits and drawbacks of certain preferences, such as using or not using assistive devices, or seeing a physical therapist for a few weeks but not long-term. We are confident we can work together to develop a realistic and sustainable treatment plan to provide the best care possible in highly unique circumstances.
